What is the Nonprofit Equipment Exchange?
The Nonprofit Equipment Exchange is a collaborative effort of Goodwill Industries of the Valleys, United Way of Roanoke Valley and the Council of Community Services. The purpose of the program is to provide nonprofit organizations access to free equipment and supplies to operate their organizations or to give to their clients. The Nonprofit Equipment Exchange program also offers a place where for-profit businesses can donate goods and receive a tax deduction for the donations.
How can an agency participate?
To qualify to receive goods, nonprofit organizations must submit an application and a copy of the 501(c)(3) documentation to the Community Impact Manager at United Way of Roanoke Valley. The Community Impact Manager will review the information and notify the applying agency of the status. The nonprofit organization must agree to:
- Use the goods solely for the care of the ill, needy or youth.
- Use the goods for the purpose of the organization, which makes it tax-exempt and only for the purpose intended.
- Not transfer the goods in exchange for money, property or other services.
- Maintain adequate books and records of this donation as required and make them available upon request.
How can a company donate items?
To donate items to the Nonprofit Equipment Exchange, please contact one of the agencies listed below. It will be decided if the items are appropriate for the program and make appropriate arrangements for the donation.
How does the program work?
The Nonprofit Equipment Exchange is located at Goodwill Industries (1489 East Main Street, Salem) and will be open each Tuesday from 9am-noon at which time a designated representative from approved agencies may choose products for their organization and clients. Each nonprofit may choose product donations from the warehouse once every three months unless there is an extenuating circumstance. The extenuating circumstance must be approved by the Community Impact Manager at United Way of Roanoke Valley. Once approved, the nonprofit may choose additional products. Each time a donation is received, the nonprofit representative must sign a donation request form. It will be the responsibility of the receiving nonprofit to arrange transportation of donated items from the warehouse.
