Nonprofit Economic Impact Study
A new study reveals that more than $220 million was raised and invested in the community by nonprofits in fiscal year 2007. Released on April 14, 2008, The Economic Impact of Nonprofits in the Roanoke Virginia Region is the first study to measure the value nonprofits contribute to the community’s economy. Spearheaded by the Council of Community Services’ Nonprofit Resource Center of Western Virginia, the report covers nonprofits serving the cities of Covington, Roanoke and Salem and the counties of Alleghany, Botetourt, Craig, Franklin and Roanoke.
The Nonprofit Resource Center’s Steering Committee is very pleased to share the report as well as the message the report sends the community. Readers may be surprised to learn that the results of study indicate that the 120 nonprofits submitting surveys have an $183,000,000 collective economic impact on the region. Welcome!
Message from M. Rupert Cutler,
Chair, Steering Committee
Welcome to the web page of the Nonprofit Resource Center (NRC) of Western Virginia, a program of the Council of Community Services in Roanoke. I hope you’ll visit this site often. Keep abreast of the NRC’s constantly changing calendar of workshops and other events. They will be designed by and for the administrators and board members who run the nonprofit organizations that contribute so much to the quality of life in our region.
If you are a nonprofit leader, or a consultant who serves nonprofits, please consider becoming a member of our organization. Help us determine its priorities and service program. Our services will expand as our membership and funding support grow.
My experience as a nonprofit association executive and board member and member of Roanoke City Council tells me that the leaders of the many fine nonprofit groups that serve our community--in such fields as human services, arts and culture, recreation, and environmental protection—encounter a variety of problems and challenges. It can be a lonely task. The goal of the Nonprofit Resource Center is to make those leaders’ jobs easier. I hope you will join us in this most exciting endeavor.
